My Adam4d.com Top 5!

2013-08-10-fb cropAdam4d.com is one of my favourite webcomics. Even better, it’s a great Christian comic with a sharp satirical edge. I’ve written about the comic before.  A couple of months ago I promised to put up a Top 5 list of my favourite Adam4d.com comics and here it is! It wasn’t easy getting it down to five but I got there eventually. These are presented in no particular order. Is your favourite on the list?

Webcomic Review: Adam4d.com

adam4dAdam4d.com is a Christian comic that has grabbed my attention over the last few months. And judging by my Facebook feed, I’m not the only one. Often laugh-out-loud funny (yes, I’m old and I will not be using the acronym, thank you) and very often insightful, Adam4d is a comic you should be checking out regularly. There are some strips that I have bookmarked for future use, because they’re just asking to be used in a sermon or Scripture class. The creator, Adam Ford, has a way of taking complex ideas and satire and reducing them to punchy sound bites and drawings that I admire. I read a lot of webcomics, but Adam4d.com is one that I know I’ll be a consistently better thinker and preacher after reading it (I’m trying hard to lay it on to thick here guys, but I really love this comic!).

Webcomics Monday: Hell and Cracked

Cracked is one of those sites that I’ve been aware of for a long time but never really paid much attention to. I bought the magazine a couple of times as a teenager, but it always struck me a as a poor man’s Mad Magazine. In recent years, Cracked has really built itself up as a website worth watching. Almost daily I’m finding an article on there that I want to link to. To me, that’s a sign of a great website.

They haven’t forgotten their comic based roots, however. This comic (warning, contains swear words) is a great example. It presents Hell as if it was a work-based sitcom. Everyone who’s ever worked in retail, for example, has had the thought that the job wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for the customers. And you can just imagine that there would be plenty of annoying customers lined up at the gates of Hell.

It’s not uncommon to find talk of Hell being a place that’s “not that bad”. That it will be one big party. Or that after a while you’ll just get used to it. I mean, you survived 6 years of high school didn’t you? You can survive anything after that.

But this comic does a great job at reminding us that Hell is not a nice place. That it is a place of torment and that they do know what they’re doing. You’re best off trying to avoid the place. Good thing Jesus offers a get-out-of-Hell-free card.

Webcomics Monday: Evolution and Least I Could Do

Ever have one of those shows or books that you’re kind of embarrassed to admit to being into? Not because it’s poor quality, but because as a Christian there’s some stuff in there that isn’t exactly above board? Least I Could Do is one of those things for me. The comic is incredibly well drawn and very funny. It’s full of fun pop culture references and extreme antics that are comedy gold. However, the main character, Rayne, is a bit of Lothario. His sexual conquests are many. And therefore there are some strips that are not exactly G rated.

But don’t worry! Today’s Webcomics Monday is not about sex, but evolution.

Wonderella and The Second Coming of Christ

I’m a big fan of the webcomic The Non-Adventures of Wonderella. I’ve linked to the comic before and I’m sure I will link to it again. The main character, Wonderella, has a connection to the gods of myth, which often brings religious themes into the comic. On top of that, the author isn’t afraid to lampoon traditions that people have that they haven’t properly thought through. That’s not to say that the traditions are bad, just that people take them for granted.

Recently, Justin Pierce (the comic’s author) posted a 3 part comic depicting the second coming of Jesus. It’s well worth checking out and discussing. You can find it here, here, and here.

Jesus would totally win in a rap battle.

Christian Dungeons and Dragons

pvp_logoDungeons and Dragons isn’t exactly popular amongst some Christians. The whole pagan gods and sorcery thing adds up to a double whamy of let’s-not-go-there. Others, as seen in this PVP strip, take a different approach to Christian gaming.

For the record: I’ve played D&D. I can see how it may be a stumbling block for some. I view it as a matter of freedom and choose to see it as engaging with fiction. But that’s a wisdom decision for the individual.

Shortpacked and the Deadbeat Dad

robin06aShortpacked is a webcomic that quite often deals with Christianity and Christian pop culture. In a comic this week, we see one possible interpretation of the virgin birth. It’s pretty funny, but I’m glad it isn’t true. It would throw all kinds of things into chaos if Jesus wasn’t sent to earth on purpose. Instead he was promised from the start that he would come to deal with sin. You know you were expected when the entire creation was created for you and by you (Check out Colossians 1:16).

Still, pretty funny!

Chocolate Crucifix

I don’t really understand why we have chocolate eggs at Easter. Chocolate crucifixes would make more sense, but be very, very wrong.

X-Men vs The Bible

2 Kings 2:23 is one of my favourite verses of the Bible. I should have realised that it was an earlyappearance of the X-Men.
