Vatican: Harry Potter No Longer A No-No

hbp-harryChristian fundamentalism and Harry Potter aren’t exactly best of friends. The Bible speaks out against magic, so many Christians put their foot down and say that any depiction of magic, whether in real life or in fiction, must be avoided. For the record, I’m not one who has a hard line stance on this issue. One of these days I’ll write a post about where I do draw the line, but I digress. I was surprised, however, to see that the Vatican appears to have loosened their stand on the Potter universe. Variety has reported that the Vatican’s official newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, has gone ahead and given the latest Harry Potter flick a thumbs up. I didn’t see that one coming.

Is anyone reading Harry Potter reviews and actually undecided about whether they want to see this movie or not? This is the sixth movie in the Harry Potter juggernaut. By now you’ve already made a commitment to the series. And if you haven’t seen the first five movies in the series, Half Blood Prince is a really bad place to start. This movie is filled with raging hormones and the darkening of the Harry Potter world. There’s way too much of one, not enough of the other.
