Vertigo put out the kind of comics I love to read. Ever since I started seriously reading comics, I’ve always hunted down that Vertigo label. Even when I don’t enjoy the comic, I know it will be at least different to everything else on the stands. And maybe even expand my mind a little bit.
When The Unwritten began a few years ago, you just knew this was going to be something special. The story started out as a conspiracy tale starring Tom Taylor, a man who had a series of Harry Potter like stories based off him. As the series has progressed, it’s become clearer that this is a story about stories – and the distinction between story and reality has got blurrier with every issue.

Deadpool can be pretty hit and miss with me. The Joe Kelly run in the late 90s was one of my early favourites when I first started getting into comics (in fact I recently bought the Joe Kelly Deadpool Omnibus, which will make me very happy for a very long time). Since Kelly stopped writing the character, I haven’t really stayed that attached to the Merc With a Mouth. But this current run, which began with Marvel NOW, has really hit that Deadpool sweet spot – funny, dark and very violent.
Coming Soon: The Ten Commandments
Heard of the Ten Commandments? Sure you have. They’re right there in Exodus 20. Maybe you’re not as familiar with the actual commandments, but have at least heard of the movie. The one with Charlton Heston, of course. The others aren’t really worth watching.
No matter how familiar you are with these laws for God’s people, you might be keen to check out an upcoming TV show based on the Ten Commandments. Ten directors, including Michael Cera and Wes Craven have been signed on to create a ten part anthology series, each episode based around one of the commandments.

The Movement is a superhero team book that’s a bit different to what we usually see from the Big 2. These characters aren’t so much heroes – they’re the super powered members of an underground “movement” in a city full of corruption and inequality. These are broken characters in a broken city, with no clear vision of how to make things right. Which opens it up for all kinds of moral ambiguity and conflicting motives.
Coming Soon: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is one of the most popular stage musicals out there. Based on the account of Joseph and his family in the book of Genesis, the musical has been doing the rounds since 1982. And now it might be heading to cinemas as an animated feature. The movie is being made by Elton John’s production company, Rocket Pictures.
Webcomic Review: Adam4d.com
Adam4d.com is a Christian comic that has grabbed my attention over the last few months. And judging by my Facebook feed, I’m not the only one. Often laugh-out-loud funny (yes, I’m old and I will not be using the acronym, thank you) and very often insightful, Adam4d is a comic you should be checking out regularly. There are some strips that I have bookmarked for future use, because they’re just asking to be used in a sermon or Scripture class. The creator, Adam Ford, has a way of taking complex ideas and satire and reducing them to punchy sound bites and drawings that I admire. I read a lot of webcomics, but Adam4d.com is one that I know I’ll be a consistently better thinker and preacher after reading it (I’m trying hard to lay it on to thick here guys, but I really love this comic!).
Welcome To Tumblr
Tumblr is probably my favourite social media place to hang out. I love checking out the creative works produced by people who are part of the same fandoms as me (Doctor Who, comic books and tokusatsu for instance) and following some of my favourite writers and actors. But let’s be honest, Tumblr can be pretty weird. I try and stay away from the “weird part” of Tumblr, but there are certain idiosyncracies about the joint that show up, especially when you’re not ready for it.
Coming Soon: Left Behind
When I became a Christian in the late 90s, the Left Behind books were one of the biggest things happening in the Christian book market. The main concept behind it – that the rapture happened and all the Christians were taken up to heaven while everyone else was “left behind” on earth to deal with what happened next – was difficult for me to get my head around as a young Christian. The theology of the rapture was not something I’d encountered before and it wasn’t taught at my church. I never got far into the books and never saw the original Kirk Cameron movies (I’d hired the first one out once, but never got around to actually watching it). But later this year a new Left Behind movie will hit cinemas, this time starring Nicolas Cage. I’m going to assume that this is going to be a thing that Christians will want to pay attention to. There’s going to be media attention and people are going to be talking about the rapture.
