Pop Culture Christ Movie Guide: 12/11/2009

PCC Movie GuideFor those of you not suffering under the burden of exams, here’s this week’s Movie Guide.

This week:

  • Amelia
  • Dorian Gray
  • The Brothers Bloom
  • 2012
  • The Boys Are Back
  • Sister Smile

Amelia (TBA)

The mystery of Amelia Earheart is fascinating. I don’t think it gets the kind of attention it deserves. Will this movie spark our imaginations?

Dorian Gray (MA)

I have a grudge against Dorian Gray because of his inclusion in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. It’s not a justified grudge but it’s there all the same. The concept of a man staying young while his portrait grows old is an interesting one and poses an interesting question about the nature of one’s soul.

The Brothers Bloom (M)

A quirky con-job story. Looks like it might be a bit of fun, but no Ocean’s 11.

2012 (M)

Two words – Disaster Porn. You’re not watching this for the characterisation. You’re not watching it for the intricate plot. You’re definitely not watching it for an exploration of Mayan beliefs. You’re watching this because you want to see stuff blow up good. Nothing wrong with that. As long as that’s what you’re looking for.

The Boys Are Back (M)

How does a man raise two boys on his own? Can it be done? This looks like a really enjoyable, blokey movie. And yes, I’m surprised that I called a movie blokey that doesn’t seem to have a single explosion in it.

Sister Smile (PG)

I couldn’t find a trailer for this one in English. From what I can tell, it looks like it explores the real life struggles of a 1950s musician who is also a nun. From the looks of things, it could be quite confronting. The trailer suggests some lesbian themes.

That’s it for this week’s Movie Guide. Keen to hear from people if they find these useful and/or if I could be approaching them differently.

About Joel A Moroney

Associate Minister at St Luke's Anglican Church, Liverpool (in the Sydney Diocese). A very strange man, but he usually has Pez, so that makes it okay.

  1. Nathan says :

Just saw a preview screening of 2012.

The visual effects are quite groundbreaking, like nothing that’s been seen before. But as a whole, and especially in terms of plot and scriptwriting, we’ve seen (and heard) it all before. No surprises here!
