Looking Forward: September 2009
It’s good to look forward to something. To take a look at what’s coming up. And considering Jesus is keeping quiet on the release date of Creation 2.0, what have we got to look forward to in the month ahead? What’s coming up in September 2009 that we should be keeping an eye out for?
Movies:
Push – Rated M (Released 10.09.09)
What’s it about: Secret organisations have been manufacturing secret agents with psychic powers. Now several psychics have gone rogue and are seeking justice.
Why you should keep an eye out: This looks like it’s going to have a lot of fun with the special effects budget. Maybe an opportunity to comment on how you use the gifts and talents you’ve been given.
Funny People – Rated MA (Released 10.09.09)
What’s it about: Adam Sandler plays a comedian who learns he has a terminal illness and takes on an apprentice.
Why you should keep an eye out: It’s a Judd Apatow movie, so it’s going to be crude. But this one looks like it’s going to be hitting a lot of sentimental points. If you knew you were going to die, what would you do with your final days? How important are human relationships in your life?
Up – Rated PG (Released 17.09.09)
What’s it about: An elderly man and a young boy embark on the adventure of a lifetime. One that involves the family home and a whole heap of balloons.
Why you should keep an eye out: It’s Pixar people. Even their worst movies are pretty good. This one came out in the US a few months ago and got some pretty good reviews. How do you cope when life doesn’t live up to the dreams? What do you do next?
Shorts – Rated PG (Released 24.09.09)
What’s it about: When a boy gets his hands on a magic wishing rock, things are looking pretty good. That’s until the grown ups get their hands on it.
Why you should keep an eye out: It’s directed by Robert Rodriguez. That alone is enough to get my attention. I’m hoping for something on par with Spy Kids. And I’m sure there’ll be a message of being careful what you wish for.
Fame – Rated M (Released 24.09.09)
What’s it about: Remember my name (Fame), I’m gonna live forever. I’m gonna learn how to fly. Oh the memories are flooding back. A group of talented performers in New York see if they have what it takes to make it.
Why you should keep an eye out: There’s going to be a lot of talented people in this movie. Do you have the discipline to succeed?
TV
Glee – (starts 17.09.09)
What’s it about: In a small backwater town, the dregs of the high school social strata get their act together to show that they have talent.
Why you should keep an eye out: I loved the pilot episode. It reminded me of Freaks and Geeks with it’s subtle black humour. And the musical numbers were a lot of fun. And can we ever have enough of shows that get the message out there that you should fulfil your potential, no matter how much your peers try and put you down? Just like these teens won’t let their peers put down their musical aspirations, as Christians we shouldn’t let peer pressure stop us from being God’s instruments in this world.
That’s what I’m looking forward to this September. What are you looking forward to? I haven’t even touched on music. What about other events? What’s coming up in September that Pop Culture Christ should be on top of? Let me know in the comments.
