What will I watch next? Part of my efforts to stay current with the world of pop culture is to watch a movie a week. Back in the days I worked in a cinema, I would watch (at least part) of almost every movie that was released, as well as a stack of videos and movies on cable TV. These days I don’t work at a cinema, have fallen behind in my DVD watching and don’t have cable TV.
So here’s how you can help. Tell me what you want me to watch. It can be on in the cinemas or out on DVD (you have a greater chance of success if it’s a weekly DVD as I can get those for $1 on Tuesdays). Preferably it will be something I haven’t seen and a) be of special interest to issues of faith OR b) be something I would enjoy.
I’m also up for TV show recommendations, especially particular episodes. Or music, or internet sites or anything. What have you seen out there that you would like a Christian perspective on? Please let me know in the comments what you would like me to watch!
American pie … the naked mile
Voodoo dolls being sold in newsagencies
Are they being sold in newsagencies? I have not seen such a thing. I must investigate
I’d love to see a review of how people receive public preaching or discussion.
What I mean by that is, Paul was actually asked to come preach his ‘new ideas’ at the Areopagus, but our culture isn’t really one of public debate and exploring ideas about God – not in the majority anyway.
So maybe review some good and bad examples of how it can be done in our culture, Sydney in particular?
I think our culture is huge on public debate, but it doesn’t happen often with someone in front of an audience giving a monologue. It happens through movies, television, music, etc. The media is the new means of debate. That’s why it’s important to engage with what’s on our screens etc.
Sure, I agree.
The thing is, most media is one-way transmission of a person or group’s ideas. Just an idea for a topic anyway.
Do you know of any successful attempts for Christians to engage in the media debate? What does it/would it take for an effective Christian movie or TV show to break into the mainstream?
You should review Learn to Study the Bible by Andy Deane (9781607915768). It teaches 40 Bible study methods in one book.
“His Dark Materials” trilogy by Philip Pullman. Sometimes called the “Anti-Narnia series, this winner of many awards has been recommended by many as good fantasy fiction for children. I’d like to know what you think of the series as a work of literature as well as one man’s take on spiritual reality and the relevance of Christianity.
It’s on my list of books to get around to reading. Definitely get to it at some stage
try Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs.
Not making it easy on me, are you Gah? I remember watching the movie adaption of Naked Lunch when I was a teenager. Don’t remember a thing about it.
“underclass hero” by sum 41. I already read your review of Jesus of Suburbia and found it illuminating; I was wondering if you cold do the same here with the song called “speaking of the devil”. The lyrics aren’t very clear, I was hoping you could give an insight on wether the song is satanic or just some metaphore for a troubled relationship. Thank you for your hard work so far! :D
Who is Speaking of the Devil by? I’d love to take a look at it
by sum41; I also noticed this album they gave me has a song called count your blessings, they must have been in a bad mood lately…!
Which album is it off? I have Does it Look Infected and All Killer No Filler
what about some technology – internet filters, good programs for pastors/ministers technology you use on a weekly basis for your ministry…maybe that is moving away from Pop Culture Christ’s aims
I reckon you should review Inception, might be a challenge ;)
I reckon you should review “Inception”, should be a challenge.
Saw Inception today. Probably approach it as either a critique of Descarte and the certainty of God’s goodness or not letting go of sin and allowing it to master us. Still working on it…
Hi Joel,
Check out the song ‘glorious feeling’ by Joelistics. Pretty interesting, the lead singer described it as an athiest hymn…
Good suggestion. Haven’t heard it before but I am a fan of TZU so I’ll ponder over it a bit
Keep hearing this new song: ‘Make it Stop’ by Rise Against. Thought you might like to exegete the lyrics….
I think you should review more recent episodes of Glee. Particularly the Episodes Mash Off and I Kissed a Girl. They are pretty hot topics and would love to hear your perspective on them.
