The Living End: Raise The Alarm

February 27, 2009

whitenoisealbumcoverIf you walked down the street and asked a random person if they believed in God, chances are they would say yes. But what God? It seems no two Gods are the same. They all have different characteristics, different qualities, different personalities. If the God I believe in is really just a construct of my mind, do I really even need him in the first place?

Do I need to believe in God?

Watchmen #7

Watchmen #7

Watchmen #7

One of the things that sets Watchmen apart from other superhero comics, especially comics prior to 1986, is its treatment of sex. Watchmen #7is all about sex. Not some cheap an tawdry porno orgy comic book, but a mature approach to two consenting adults exploring sex. Two adults who also dress up in costumes and fight crime.

Watchmen #4

Watchmen #4

Watchmen #4

Only 8 more days until I will be either deliriously happy or uncontrollably homicidal. That’s right, the Watchmen movie is finally upon us! I started reviewing the individual issues late last year. And like so many other things, it got abandoned over summer. 8 days. 9 issues left. Let’s do this thing.

What does it mean to be human? At what point do you stop being human and start being something else? Could God be one of us? Just a slob like one of us? Just a naked blue guy on the surface of Mars trying to find his way home?

Book Review: The Shack

September 30, 2008
The Shack

The Shack

Why does a good God allow suffering in the world? It’s a question that comes up time and time again. As people who live in a fallen world, we are constantly confronted with tragic events. Why do good people die? Why are we attacked by natural disasters? If there is a God, why isn’t he doing his job? Why does he let bad things happen if he’s all that he’s cracked up to be?

Everyone struggles with this issue, Christian or not. We want someone to be held accountable for things that go wrong. As a Christian, it can be difficult to reconcile the God of love with the God who allows evil to exist in this world. What if there was a book that could explain this? What if there is a book that could help us understand who God is and what he has done? If only there was a book that could clearly explain God. The Shack is being put forward as the solution. The Shack is being put forward as a great way to understand God. Unfortunately, The Shack should not be a place you go to for answers.

Final Crisis – Revelations #1

Final Crisis - Revelations #1

Final Crisis - Revelations #1

Final Crisis – Revelations #1

Dc Comics

Written by Greg Rucka

Pencils by Philip Tan

What is the deal with people using the word Revelations in titles? Are they trying to be high brow? Are they trying to invoke Biblical themes of judgement and destruction? Are they trying to show they know what they’re talking about? Because it’s not working, people! It’s Revelation. Not Revelations. There was one vision given to John written down in the New Testament. Not plural. You use Revelations and I’m going to write you off as a try hard. Sorry, that’s just the way it is.

Anyway, let’s talk about the Spectre.

Movie Review: Kung Fu Panda (2008)

July 29, 2008

Kung Fu Panda

Kung Fu Panda

Kung Fu Panda (2008 )

Rated PG

Starring Jack Black

Before we begin, let’s have a look at the check list. Jack Black comedy? Check. Cute animated animals? Check. An inept and unsuitable protagonist who is the “chosen one”? Check. Before you even walk into the cinema, you know what you’re going to get. You know how the plot is going to go and how its going to resolve. Only one question remains – will it be worth watching?

Alice Cooper – I Just Wanna Be God

July 23, 2008
Dragontown

Dragontown

The character of Alice Cooper is the villain of his show. You’re meant to cheer against him. He says things and does things that fly in the face of normalcy and decency. He is counter cultural and digs up those things we’d rather be left buried. And that’s a good thing. He challenges us to recognise the things in this world that we’d rather sweep under the carpet and ignore. And sometimes, whilst he’s delighting us with sick fantasies, he can reveal something about human nature that we’d rather he didn’t say. Because it’s true. I DO just wanna be God.

Comics: Supergirl and The Fall

Supergirl #25

Supergirl #25 (1996)

God is a ten year old boy wearing a bow tie and calls himself Wally. You didn’t know that? You have obviously never read Peter David’s run on Supergirl from the 90s. Oh, and Supergirl is an angel. What has all this got to do with Genesis 2-3? Good question. Read the rest of this entry »
